Week 6 was Filled Controversy and Fun

We are here, the fun part of Cross Country Season, where the teams and athlete are showing who they. This is where the summer miles start to kick in and the tempo and race pace sessions start to ramp up. Although there was some controversy this week, athletes still performed and put up some good performances as they head for the stretch run.

This weekend we seen one of the highlight meets, the Cedric Walker HBCU Cross Country Challenge. This meet has been a staple in the HBCUs schedule. However, the past few seasons, teams have not competed at this meet for various reasons. This year was filled with some controversy as the Men's 8K was led to run more by the lead gater. Instead of running the traditional 8K, the men were led to run 8.7K. This resulted in frustration and confusion as the men ran on a course which they knew while running was longer. With that, out of 12 teams, North Carolina A&T came out victorious over Benedict scoring 24 points. The race was won by Mathew Chesum of Benedict, who is now on a 4 meet winning streaks.

The women's race had some controversy itself as the lead group of this race had some confusion. The top two runners made a wrong turn as they followed the gator which led them off the course. This gave opportunity for G'Jasmyne Butler of North Carolina A&T to get the victory in a time of 18:55. The team title for the women went to Fayetteville State University who won 62-68 over Maryland-Eastern Shore. Fayetteville State looks to repeat as champions of the CIAA and this was proof that they are up for the task.

The top 7 performances from the meet were all under 20 minutes:

2. Dawnel Collymore (Benedict)- 19:03

3. Ashley Jean-Raymond (North Carolina Central)- 19:08

4. Infinattie Rowe (Morgan State)- 19:12

5. Shalah Means (North Carolina A&T)- 19:48

6. Mercy Chemutai (Fayetteville State)- 19:52

7. Kyla Franks (Virginia State)- 19:58

After this meet, team are gearing up for the conference championships. Some have one more meet to go before they compete for titles.
