Top Performers from the First Weekend of XC

The first official weekend of Cross Country competition displayed many HBCU athletes who are in good form to have great seasons ahead of them. These are the athletes who made their marks on their respective XC courses this past weekend:

Mercy Chebet- (Jackson State)- Chebet finished 4th at the Mississippi College Season Opener. She had a finishing time of 15:56.

Mathew Chesum (Benedict)- Chesum, took their competition up a notch at the Carolina Challenge where he won the Men's 5k with a time of 15:44. He defeated athletes from Division 1 schools such as Clemson, the Citadel, Presbyterian, and Gardner Webb.

Ashley Jean-Raymond (North Carolina Central)- Jean-Raymond finished 45th overall in top heavy field. With perennial powerhouses in the field (UNC, Duke, Elon, Campbell) she finished in the thick of the pack with a time of 16:01.


Regan Kimtai (North Carolina A&T)- After a strong contingent of Duke and Campbell runners, Kimtai finished 15th overall in the men's 6K with a time of 18:51.


Arion Span (Alabama State)- Spann competed in a very tough field and finished 12th overall behind athletes from Auburn, Troy, and North Alabama. She finished with a time of 15:11 in the 4K.


Melanie White (Howard)- White won the Howard University Labor Day Classic in Washington, DC with a time of 20:28.


Gavin Williams (Howard)- Like teammate White, Williams also won the men's section of the Howard University Labor Classic. The men competed in the 5k as well and he won with a time of 16:16.


These athletes have started the year off on a good note and looks to improve as they go into the more difficult portions of their season.
