HBCU Athletes Set to Compete at USAs

Updated: Jul 27, 2019

The time is here. The 2019 USATF Toyota Outdoor Track and Field Championships is upon us and the HBCU World is well represented, with many with great chances of making the Team USA to compete at IAAF World Championships in late September.

Here are a few athletes who have legitimate shots at making Team USA:

Ce’aira Brown (Hampton)- Brown has been a consistent force in the pro scene. A converted middle distance runner from the 400, the former MEAC Champion in the 800 comes in with a 1:58.01, which is third on the qualifying list. She is coming off a gold, with Donovan Brazier, at the IAAF World Relays in the Mixed 2x2x400, where each runner runs two 400s. She also placed 3rd at the 2019 USATF Indoor Championships in the 1000M and 3rd at the 2018 USATF Outdoor Championships. If everything follows suit, we should see her in Doha for Worlds. She is also declared for the 1500M but the 800 is her stronger event.

Tyrell Richards (South Carolina State)- Richards didn’t end his collegiate season the way he wanted, having to pull out during the 200 at MEAC Championships. However, his long-term goal was to make the team and compete for a world medal. After finishing the Indoor season ranked #1 in the World in the 400M, he looks to replicate that performance outdoors. He will need that and more to make the team with how stacked the U.S. is in the 400.

Kayla White- (North Carolina A&T)- White had a breakout year for the Aggies. After finishing indoors with a World Lead and NCAA Championship in the 200, she positioned herself as one of the top young runners in the world. She looks to continue and make the world team. She is also declared for the 200M but her better chance is in the 100M where she is ranked #3. If she runs her PR or close to it, she will have a great chance of making the team.

Trevor Stewart (North Carolina A&T)- the NCAA Runner-up and MEAC Champion in the 400, Stewart has shown he is one of the top quarter milers in the world. He is currently ranked #3 in the world. Stewart has a great shot at not only making the team but medaling at Worlds. It’s not a foregone conclusion since everyone should be peaking at Worlds but if Stewart does as well, look to see him on the podium.

Here is a list of all the competitors who are representing HBCUs:

Christopher Belcher (North Carolina A&T)- 100m and 200m

Deonca Bookman (Prairie View A&M)- 400H
